Coeur d'Alene Is Where We Live and Work
Coeur d'Alene is home for us and for our flagship store. In October 2016, we moved from a small space on South 4th Street into our own building on Sherman Avenue, the former Everson Jewelry space. We gave the retail floor a full makeover: we scraped off the 1970s popcorn ceilings, tore out the drywall to expose the building's original 1920s brick, and added plenty of Mountain Madness style.
We sit right on the shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene in North Idaho, 15 miles from Washington, 50 from Montana, and 90 from British Columbia. Coeur d'Alene draws visitors in every season, and downtown is always buzzing, with Sherman Avenue lined with local shops and restaurants. Mountains and forests surround the town, so there's no shortage of ways to get outside, whether you're in town or heading out of it. It's a great place to live and an even better place to visit, and we'd love for you to stop by while you're here.
Basecamp: Where We Make It All
Every bar, bath bomb, and balm we sell is made by hand at Basecamp, just up Fourth Street from our store. The building went up in 1924 on the old Yellowstone Trail, America's first northern coast-to-coast highway, which once ran right up Fourth Street on its way out of town. It started life as a gas station and garage serving travelers headed west, and it still has plenty of that old character, right down to the original single-pane windows. These days, instead of fuel and oil changes, it's filled with the scent of essential oils and fresh-cut soap.
We make all of our soap from scratch using the cold process method, the old-fashioned way. Lye turns plant-based oils and butters into soap and naturally occurring glycerin, and you won't find any melt-and-pour bases in our bars. We still make every batch small, which lets us add our own artistry to each loaf and stay true to what makes Mountain Madness soap unique.
